Selfie was introduced into the Oxford English Dicitionary in 2013, and the photographic self-portrait has become an important part of how contemporary people present themselves to the world. But artists have been making selfies since the beginnings of art. Rembrandt, Courbet, Van Gogh and Picasso are some of the more famous selfie painters in art history, but most artists have made a self-portrait at one point or another in their life. YOUR TIME WILL BE NOW! For this project, you will draw 30 self-portraits. In each of them you will experiment with style and drawing materials in an attempt to explore the broadest range of creative possibilities you can think of. You will then choose your “best” 20 drawings and mount them into a creative art book. The drawings and the book making will be marked completely separately, but both projects are of equal overall value in your final grade for this course. (They are both worth 20%) This project is due on February 6th.
